Luckly I had a stash of Denyse Schmidt fabrics in home decorator weight cotton on hand and some non slip backing in the cupboard.
Here's the finished product and it feels lovely under my feet while doing the dishes.
The real test will be tonight when Heidi is let in.
That looks really lovely! I suppose it being homedec it will wear and wash well too. Great colours.

I just found out about a product - called roclon (or something like that lol) that you can use as a base for floor quilts that stabilizes them and stuff washes right off! It came to mind when I read the last part of your post - letting Heidi in! :) (i read about it over on ihaveanotion.blogspot.com if you're curious)
