THIS IS WHAT I LOVE THE MOST ABOUT QUILTING

A couple of years ago I completed Daniel's quilt made with his baby clothes and some other fabrics reflective of what I loved at the time.
For those that haven't seen this quilt, here are a couple of photos.

I made this quilt to be tucked away and hopefully brought out if Daniel is a father one day. I love the hand quilting on it and every stitch was stitched with love.

This is my favourite kind of quilting, taking something personal and turning it into something usable and reflective of my love for that said person.

Today I made up Lachlan's quilt, once again with fabrics cut from the baby clothes he wore. I know some people out there probably think I'm mad to cut up these clothes but I knew from the beginning what I wanted to do and collected these clothes for that purpose. I have Sophie's newborn clothes tucked away for when the inspiration strikes one day. Making these quilts is not for the faint-hearted, the fabrics are incredibly stretchy and are cause for quite a few headaches but so worth it in the end.

You will see in the photo below that some of the seams do not match up, no matter how hard you try, the fabrics will still stretch in some cases. I chose my favourite Amy Butler fabric, Lotus Dots to offset the baby clothes then a grey homespun for the thin border and Shade Garden by Michelle Engel Bencsko for the large border and backing.

I have started hand quilting this quilt and will take my time finishing as I enjoy every stitch.

  1. I think this is such a great idea. I gave my MIL who is an amazing quilter a bag of each of my kid's baby clothes, so that she could do the same thing.
I can't wait to see what she does with them.

  4. It's a great idea Sue and exactly what quilting cam from. Have you read the Elm Creek books? I'm pretty sure you would enjoy them as they are centred around quilting.

  5. I agree - wonderful! I wish I'd come to sewing before my kids grew past the baby stage. The time and love you put into those you will never regret, that's for sure.
